SCHOOL NEWS

DRAFT SCHOOL CALENDAR FOR NEXT SCHOOL YEAR – AND FOR 2017-18 & 2018/19

The proposed draft calendar for the 2016-17 school year has now been posted on the VSB website. There is also a proposed draft calendar for the 2017-18 and 2018-19 school years. These can be viewed at https://www.vsb.bc.ca/calendars-events. Should parents wish to provide any feedback, they are welcome to do so by emailing calendar@vsb.bc.ca before February 26th. The final school calendar(s) will be approved and published before the end of March.

REGISTRATION FOR GR. 1 – 7 FOR SCHOOL YEAR 2016-2017

A reminder to all parents: The “Are you planning on returning?” form have been sent home. Thank you for those that have already returned it. If you have not seen this please call the office to get a copy. It is important to let us know if your children are coming back to Gordon in Sept. 2016, as it is critical for our planning for spaces at the new school.

Also, if you know of any other families in our catchment that don’t have children currently attending General Gordon please make sure they know NOW is the time to come in and register to save their space at our school for next year. We are anticipating it will be a very full school when we move into our new building in the Fall of 2016. Thus, we cannot accept anyone who is cross boundary next year.

NEWS FROM GORDON AT THE MAIN SITE

PIZZA SALES

Pizza will be sold in the lunch room on Fridays.  This is a fundraising effort for the Grade 7’s Quebec trip. They will sell until they run out - hopefully they will have enough pizza for everyone, but they don’t know how popular it will be, so please pack food with your child so no one goes hungry. There are no order forms, cash only. $3 one slice, $5 for two, plain cheese pizza and pepperoni.

PAC NEWS

Playground Update as of Feb.4th, 2016:

At a meeting on December 7th with PAC reps and the VSB project managers, the Vancouver School Board gave final approval for PAC to plant four mature cedar trees on the Gordon site during the construction phase of the seismic project with the goal to create a "mini-forest" that provides a "covered area" on rainy days.

On December 17th, our tree supplier representative from Terrasol Environment Inc. and two members of the PAC playground committee (complete with safety gear, steel-toed boots and detailed medical emergency instructions) were given access to the school construction site to scout locations for the trees.  We put four stakes in the ground (which can be easily seen from the publicly accessible Montessori school grounds until Mid-March) to represent the locations where we hoped to be able to put the four trees. On December 19th, three members of the PAC playground committee and their kids went out to Terrasol's tree farm in Langley to choose four cedar trees (see photo below).  Apologies for not being able to open the tree-picking to a wider group.  Time was of the essence as the trees need to be prepped for transplant, and the sooner the trees were picked, the better.  Our trees are the furthest tree on the right, and the second and fourth tree in from the right.  Our fourth tree is not in the picture.

On February 2nd, the VSB approved our requested tree placement location (see landscape plan below which shows the far SW corner of the grassy area.  The green circles are the new trees.  The yellow circle is a small tree we are shifting over approximately 10 feet).   The planting will take place sometime at the end of March/beginning of April.   We will keep you updated as to when that will happen.

Fundraising:  On Thursday Feb.4th, we had a playground fundraising meeting, and we have determined we need to raise $36,000 by June in order to pay for our Phase 1 items.   We will endeavour to update the playground website (http://gordonplayground.strikingly.com/) by the end of the long weekend so you can check out what Phase 1 and Phase 2 are all about sometime mid next week.   And if the urge strikes, please donate!!  Just $36,000 more to go before June!!

All the best, The Playground Committee.
