Code of Conduct

Statement of Purpose

Gordon School promotes the values expressed in the BC Human Rights Code respecting the rights of all individuals in accordance with the law-prohibiting discrimination based on race, colour, ancestry, place of origin, religion, marital status, family status, physical or mental disability, sex or sexual orientation-in respect of discriminatory publication and discrimination in accommodation, service and facility in the school environment.

We will accomplish this by choosing:

TO BE FAIR


UNACCEPTABLE BEHAVIOUR:

Unkind Behaviour

For example:

  • Hurtful words, sassy backtalk
  • Rude body language
  • Excluding others/Dismissive behaviour (‘dissing’)
  • Any behaviour or communication that discriminates based on race, colour, ancestry, place of origin, religion, marital status, family status, physical or mental disability, sex or sexual orientation.

    Unsafe Behaviour

    For example:

  • Harming others/Running inside
  • Pushing, hitting, kicking, etc.
  • Sliding, climbing, jumping dangerously
  • Lack of cooperation with school staff

    Unfair Behaviour

    For example:

  • Disruptive noise
  • Littering/Swearing/Cheating
  • Lying/throwing food/ not cleaning up after oneself after lunch/snack

    Consequences for choosing Unkind, Unsafe, Unfair behaviour are intended to be consistent, preventative, fair, restorative, and may include:

    Initial, Minor Infractions:

  • A discussion with an adult
  • Referral to classroom teacher
  • A “Time Out” for reflection

    Repeated Misbehaviour:

  • Infraction recorded on a discipline form, which will be communicated to parents
  • Loss of privileges e.g. time spent off the playground; Removal of possession e.g. skateboard

    Serious Problems and/or refusal to change:

  • Completion of discipline form (as above)
  • Discussion with administration
  • Parents informed – behaviour plan developed
  • In school / out of school suspension

    Notification: As circumstances warrant, any or all of the following may be notified:

    Classroom Teacher, Counsellor, Principal / Vice Principal, Staff, Parents, District Staff, Ministerial Agencies, School Liaison Officer
