SCHOOL NEWS

FROM THE LIBRARY

Mary and Karen have been busy giving an orientation to each class for this new school year. Kindergartens will take out their first book this week or next. The library is now open to all students. After-school library hours (at the main) are Monday, Tuesday, and Friday - 2:45 - 3:10. The annex is open on Thursday after school 3:00 - 3:30.

The library has two requests please: Plastic bags – do you have any clean bags with handles that can be reused for books? Parent helpers – we only need a few. Please let Mary or Karen know if you can help out.

Thank you very much!

GOAL-SETTING CONFERENCES

For these conferences teachers facilitate a time for parents to come in and see what their children are working on, and learning in their classrooms. The students choose goals for themselves for the term. One of our school goals this year is to provide opportunities for students to become proficient in the skills and strategies required to self-assess and self-evaluate which will support competent, confident and consistent independent learning. Please make sure you set up a time to meet with your child’s teacher in order to foster a positive productive working relationship. Forms will be coming home next week

PROFESSIONAL DAY

On Monday, September 14 the staff worked on a variety of items. They focused on the new curriculum in the morning looking at planning among grade groups with some of the focus on our school plan of self-assessment. In the afternoon we had a speaker Liz Schultz who shared three different media literacy units: violence in cartoons (Primary), Food (primary/intermediate), and Body Image (intermediate 6/7). She is a master facilitator with children and gets them to think critically about the media that bombards them every day in our ever changing digital world.

SOCCER FOR GRADE 7 GIRLS

Practices on Tuesday after school and Games are at Kerrisdale School on Thursdays after school.

Congratulations to their first games where they won 3 and tied 1. Well done girls! Thanks to our coaches who also helped to ref them in their games.

CROSS-COUNTRY

CROSS-COUNTRY PRACTICES – At the Main Tuesday & Thursday mornings at 8:00AM
- At the Annex Tuesday & Friday Mornings at 8:10AM

Info for the Annex:Meeting place for the practices: the undercover area at the Annex where bags can be left safe and dry. All runners must be accompanied by a parent or caregiver for practices and meets. You can organize to have one parent watching over a handful of friends/relatives, but students cannot be left at practices or meets alone. There are only 2-3 coaches present for each practice and meet so students should be watched at all times by their caregiver or a parent they know well.

When crossing the street to Chaldecott Park with students, please cross at the corner where it is safe to do so.

The first meet is next week Wednesday at Camosun Park, 15:30. Please organize driving/walking and supervision for your child.

Gordon students: Mme Nancy will be handing out Gordon Jerseys in the gym that afternoon. Please return the jersey to school washed after the cross-country season.

Info for the Main: Students at the main must be able to be to stay on their own during practices. However please organize driving/Walking and supervision for your child during the cross country meets. Parents are encouraged to come and cheer on the Gordon Team! Mr. Patrick will be handing out Gordon Jerseys after school on the day of the meets.

The Cross-country meets are on:

• Wednesday, Sept. 30 Camosun Park Queen Elizabeth Track
• Monday, October 5 Jericho West Park 1515 Discovery (across from the hostel)
• Thursday, October 15 Vanier Park Between Space Centre and Maritime Museum
• Thursday, October 22 Trout Lake 15th and Victoria –Finals at 1:00pm

PARENT VOLUNTEERS

Looking for a parent to help facilitate a chess club at lunch. We also would like someone to help with our photography club. We have lots of keen students who are enthusiastic about participating in school events. In October we will be looking for volunteers to help coach volleyball. Please let Ms. Davidson if you are interested in any of these opportunities for children. mdavidson@vsb.bc.ca.

LOST AND FOUND

Every two months we will be going through the Lost and Found and donating the items to Big Brothers. The next pick up will be the end of November. If there is a parent that would like to volunteer to do this please let Ms. Davidson know at mdavidson@vsb.bc.ca

WET DAYS AT THE PORTABLES

As the weather changes and get cooler and wetter, we encourage all students to bring a pair of indoor shoes and a change of clothing to their classroom. Please ensure your child has proper shoes/boots and a good, warm jacket with a hood as the children are outside more than a regular school.

PUMPKIN SALES AT CHOICES HELPS OUT GORDON STUDENTS

With every pumpkin sold at Choices, a small percentage will come to Gordon students. The school uses this money to help with students who are not able to afford field trips, camp, supplies etc. Thank you for your participation in this program and thanks to Choices who are giving back to their community.

QUEEN ELIZABETH SCHOLASTIC FAIR

Queen Elizabeth School is hosting a Scholastic Book Fair in the auditorium on Oct. 5, 6, and 7th. Our community is invited to come and check out the books.
