Principal’s Message – First Impressions
Dear Gordon Community;
We are happy to have our “francophone friends” back with us again after their trip East. Division 3 and 4 and four Gordon staff members spent one full week immersed in French as they experienced the culture of Quebec. What a great experience!
Just a reminder that morning supervision does not begin until 8:40 AM, so please do not send your children to school unescorted before this time as we cannot guarantee their safety. On this topic, we are pleased to announce our library is now open 5 days a week at 8:40 AM. Over the next few weeks we will also be hiring a new four day-a-week support teacher as well. This extra staffing is thanks to the Supreme Court decision on Class Size and Composition. A great victory for public education.
As a newbie here at Gordon I have been figuring out all the school rules. I think there has been some confusion with the students, so I wanted to remind them of a few things. First, there is no electronics Friday. This was a staff decision that was made back in September. All electronics should be safely stored from 9 to 3 PM, unless a teachers asks students to use it for educational purposes. Students are always welcome to use our school phone if necessary. Staff also made it clear that there is no gum chewing and no hats or hoodies allowed during assemblies. Thank you for your support at home with enforcing these rules.
Two Exciting Upcoming Events
Our Celebration of Learning/ Heritage Fair is being held on Wednesday, March 8th. Students choose an historical topic, gather materials and information, summarize their information and then represent their learning in a creative way. This is a fantastic opportunity for students to explore and learn about topics they connect with or are passionate about. More information will be coming home from your child’s teacher.
Right after Spring Break we will be holding our Gordon Talent Show. A notice will be available to pick up in the office for students who are interested in preparing a performance. Auditions will be held from February 28th, and end on March 10th. Students must have prepared to be considered. Rehearsals will take place on April 3 & 4th. Then, there will be a Dress Rehearsal on April 5th and the actual Talent Show on April 6th. Parents are invited to attend both the Dress Rehearsal and Talent Show.
I look forward to seeing you at one of our upcoming exciting events.
Hope Sterling, Principal
**Update Changes to the 2017/2018 School Calendar**
We have been advised by the District that the Winter Break dates for 2017-18 have been changed to December 25th to January 5th – to align with all other neighbouring districts.
BE PEANUT AWARE – We have noticed that some children are coming to school with peanut butter in their lunches. As we have children in our school that are highly allergic to ALL TREE NUTS we ask that you DO NOT pack any nut products in snacks and lunches. Thank you.
ADHD SUPPORT GROUP – Managing Childhood Anxiety – Thur. Feb. 23 @ Finlandia Pharmacy Health Centre. Doors open at 7:00pm. Register by email with your full name and phone number at firstname.lastname@example.org or call 604-734-7760.
DRAWS FOR CHOICE PROGRAMS AND KINDERGARTEN PLACEMENTS
Due to the Supreme Court decision around Class Size Composition, the district has delayed all draws until March 1st. This will affect Gordon Kindergarten applicants. If you have applied for a spot in our Kindergarten program for Sept. 2017 we will contact you after March 1st to let you know your position in the draw. Our Late French Immersion program draw has already taken place and will stand. We will contact neighbouring schools letting know of your acceptance after March 1st. Thank you for your patience.
A PIECE OF THE PIE TIP
PIE is the group Partners for Inclusive Education. To achieve an inclusive community, we believe that every person, regardless of their challenges, is important, and participates and contributes something unique and valuable to our community.
On Wednesday February 15th 2017 , 7pm at General Gordon Library, PIE presents Michelle Perri, Social Worker who will talk about Anxiety in Children and what parents can do to support their children. All parents of children at General Gordon and community are welcome . Please spread the word and RSVP to Erika and Denise, at the PIE email: email@example.com
Piece of the PIE TIP: Friendship can look different for different kids. Invite you child to reflect on how some of his/her friends show friendship.
Every person in our community is a piece of the PIE. Watch here for regular tips on how to be a piece of that PIE. Denise Edwards and Erika Cedillo Co-Chairs Partners for Inclusive Education
